A Big Mac for Jesus

If you're anything like me, you've had your fair share of days when you feel like you just can't stand your job any longer.  You find it boring, repetitive, and don't really see the benefit or purpose of it.  Too often our workplaces become nothing more than the means to an end with nothing but the paycheck in our sights.  Let me go ahead and tell you right now, if this is the way you view work then you are going to be miserable.

I used to think that if I could just land the right job then life would be perfect.  When I worked at a sub-sandwich shop I soon found myself thinking, "Really, what am I accomplishing in life."  When I moved up to the bookstore that I thought would be a dream job, I eventually started questioning my value and contribution to society.  Then I landed an awesome ministry job at a church and thought "well this is going to solve all my problems."  I've been doing this for nearly two months now and let me go ahead and say it hasn't.  And here's why:

Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men."  And then in the later half of verse 24, "You are serving the Lord Christ."  The reason I can't always see the big picture and see my value when it comes to work is because I don't always realize Who I'm doing it for.  Much too often I look simply to my job description for meaning.  What I need to be doing, and what we all need to be doing, is  looking to Christ and asking how can I glorify Him in my work.  As we read here, the best start is simply to give your very best.  Take on your duties with gusto knowing Christ is watching.  Furthermore, use the opportunities work has given you to share Christ, show love, and display a humble faith.  There is no job too big or too small for Jesus.  Whether you work in a church, in a hospital, in a bookstore, or in a McDonald's, you're working for the Lord.  Remember that and you will find your meaning.
