God is in the Rain

This past Monday, as I was putting the bulletin together, I heard the pitter pat of rain outside the office window. Resisting its restful lullaby I thought to myself about a quote from a movie I once saw. “God is in the rain.” For some reason or another, these words have stuck with me over the years. I’m not sure exactly what their intended meaning was in the context of the movie, but for me the sleek elegance of the phrase was enough. Now, though, as I hear the sound of the rain outside my window, they suddenly take on meaning for me…almost as if God were speaking through each drop.

The funny thing about rain is that when you step into it, removing the shelter of a roof or umbrella, it doesn’t just fall all around you or make contact with your skin and roll to the ground. No, instead rain accumulates and settles with us. It soaks into our clothes and sticks to our skin. It glistens atop every strand of hair. So too, I believe this can well describe the Christian’s relationship with God. When we open ourselves up to him and expose ourselves to the spiritual elements, then God soaks us. He rains his mercy down upon us and our lives are filled with Him. Of course, we’re always able to put that shelter back up – close Him out, erect a tent of sin, open the umbrella of faithlessness. As we do we slowly dry out, having God evaporate from our lives. This week make sure to walk in the rain for “God is in the rain.”
